The government has announced a temporary change to the rules relating to doctor’s fit notes.

For all absences beginning on or after 10 December 2021, workers need only provide a fit note after 28 days of absence, rather than the usual 7 days. Staff can self-certify for any period of absence up to 28 days.

This change will apply to all absence up to and including absences which begin on or before 26 January 2022. For all absences beginning on or after 27 January 2022 will revert to the usual self-certification period of 7 days.

This change has been brought in to help mitigate some of the pressures on the NHS of the booster vaccination programme allowing GP’s to focus more of their attention on vaccinations.
