Self-isolation Period Cut to 5 Days

The minimum self-isolation period for those testing positive for Covid-19 has been cut to 5 days from today, 17 January 2022, regardless of vaccination status.

The day symptoms begin or a person tests positive is treated as day zero. The following day is treated as day one of the isolation period. It is now possible to leave isolation sooner by taking a lateral flow test on days five and six. Provided that both test results are negative and the individual does not have a temperature, they can immediately leave isolation. If the lateral flow test result is still positive they must remain in isolation until they have had two negative results taken on consecutive days, or after 10 days.

The move is intended to help ease staff shortages across the country. However, Government guidance still recommends that those who leave self-isolation on or after day six should work from home, if they can, and limit close contact with others, particularly those how are at higher risk of severe illness if they were to contract Covid-19.

The rules for contacts of those who have tested positive for Covid-19 have not changed. Fully vaccinated individuals should take lateral flow test every day for 7 days, but are not legally required to self-isolate. Unvaccinated contacts are legally required to self-isolate for the full 10 day period.
