Workers Told ‘Work From Home If You Can’ as Strict Restrictions Return

The government has today announced (22 September) that people in England should work from home ‘if they can’.

The announcement comes amongst a raft of new restrictions being introduced in an effort to prevent another national lockdown.

The Prime Minister has said that the UK has reached ‘a perilous turning point’ and that the restrictions to reduce social mixing and slow the spread of the coronavirus could prevent tougher rules later.

The new rules will bring England into line with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – where people have been advised to work from home wherever possible, throughout the pandemic.

This is a dramatic turnaround following the government’s campaign last month, encouraging workers to go back to the office, in an effort to get the economy going again.

Today’s announcement will be very challenging for many businesses and workers who have been undertaking a phased return to the workplace over the past few weeks, particularly as early indications suggest that the new COVID restrictions could last six months.
