What It’s Like Working as a Trainee Solicitor at Nockolds Solicitors

By Katie Bond

Associate

I joined Nockolds in 2018 having gone straight from university into working life.  I am currently halfway through my training contract which means two seats down and two more to go.

So far, I have completed seats in both the Family Team and the Wills and Probate Team – my third seat in the Residential Property Team is due to start in mid-September.

Working as a Trainee

Nockolds is a full service law firm with two offices in Bishop’s Stortford and London. I commenced my training contract in the head office in Bishop’s Stortford.

In my first week, I was overwhelmed by new faces, names, surroundings and a whole load of information. As the weeks and months went by, everything became more familiar and I was surprised by how at home I felt.

Now here I am, having completed half of my training and wondering where the time has gone.

From the beginning of my training contract I was given responsibility and supervision which made my training contract both exciting and challenging. I was given tasks varying from drafting letters and legal documents to attending court with the client and eventually conducting meetings with clients on my own.

Throughout both of my seats, I have had a lot of client exposure which has enhanced not only my interpersonal skills but also my confidence. It has been a great way to build relationships and develop my character as a future solicitor.

Throughout my training I have had regular appraisals with my supervising partner and been given opportunities to choose the seats in which I would like to gain experience so that I have a well-rounded knowledge when I come to qualify.

The People

Despite the firm’s continual growth, the culture at Nockolds has remained one of a family environment.

During my period of training, Nockolds has won many awards for being a great employer and this is something which I have experienced through the level of support, encouragement and gratitude which I have received.

As a trainee, it can feel daunting going into a working environment, especially when you’re new and learning, but everyone from support staff to partner level has been approachable and supportive.

Being part of Nockolds doesn’t mean all work and no play. Nockolds has a great social environment, including small initiatives like ‘coffee with a colleague’ which allows colleagues to take time out of the office and get to know each other.

Nockolds also has a social and a charity committee which organises events throughout the year which are always great fun and a good way to socialise with other members of staff.

Professional development is something which Nockolds strongly encourages. Trainees are invited to attend various networking events throughout the year as a way to enhance networking skills, network with other professionals and build relationships.

Advice

As a trainee, I have learnt to take every opportunity and get involved wherever possible.

Absorb information given to you and do not be afraid to ask questions. Enjoy the experience of moving around teams, learning new things and meeting new people as the time really does fly, and before you know it, you will be qualified.
