Your First Month as a Line Manager: A Practical Guide

By Helen Burrowes

Senior HR Consultant

The first 30 days of being a line manager is an important period of time for laying a solid foundation in this leadership role.

When employees are high performers, they are often promotion into a more senior position – and in some circumstances this means taking on the responsibility of managing team members.  People are often promoted into leadership positions without having any form of management training, which can have a considerable impact on their confidence and success in the role.  The only reference point relating to management, is their individual experience of their line manager and the management style displayed.

Investing in formal management training will provide the company with considerable benefits, and high performing teams.  It is therefore vital to implement a management and leadership programme within the business.

First 30 Days in a Leadership Position

This guide provides what you need to focus on during this initial period, and then the Line Manager training to be scheduled in:

To understand the team:
  • Hold individual meetings
  • Use ways to build a relationship / build trust
  • Observe the team to understand the dynamics
Understand what the company expects from your performance
  • Your responsibility in the overall company
  • How you contribute to the company goals
  • How your team contributes to the company goals
  • How success is measured
Build relationships with key stakeholders (inside and outside of the company)
  • Develop peers within the management structure
  • Understand cross department collaboration
Familiarise yourself with processes and systems
  • Develop your understanding of processes and systems, look for ways to improve and make efficiencies
  • Recognise any process/system issues (this may come from the team)

Consolidate all of the information gathered during the first 30 days to help to inform of your next steps.  This will guide you on what to prioritise and set a standard for longer term success.  Then comes the formal line manager training, to assist you with the HR processes associated in this management position.
