The Army Reserve in the UK typically requires a minimum commitment of 27 training days per year (or 19 days for some specialist units).
I, HR Consultant Mia Gaitely, am a National Reservist, which means I complete 19 training days annually. I’ve just returned from my latest 5-day training package, designed to keep Reservists up to date with essential military skills. These days are then recorded in our Individual Training Record.
What Training Involves
Across those 5 days, we refreshed a wide range of skills, including:
- Weapon handling
- Battlefield casualty drills / first aid
- Navigation
- Pairs fire and manoeuvre
- Escape and evasion
- Lessons on behaviour, security, and more
To someone outside the military, this might sound unusual or even unnecessary, but for Reservists it’s essential. If ever called upon, we must be fully prepared and compliant with training requirements.
Why Flexibility Matters for Employers
Employers play a crucial role in supporting Reservists. Where possible, offering flexibility so employees can attend training can make a real difference — and it also brings benefits back into the workplace.
Reservists often gain:
- Leadership skills
- Decision-making under pressure
- First-aid knowledge
- Resilience and adaptability
These skills directly enhance performance in civilian roles.
Employers are not legally obliged to pay employees during training. However, many choose to offer up to 10 days of paid leave for Reservists. Otherwise, employees will need to use annual leave or take unpaid leave to attend.
My Experience
For me personally, those 5 days were invaluable. I enjoyed meeting people with similar backgrounds, and there’s always a sense of pride when I put the uniform back on. My favourite part was refreshing my first-aid skills — something useful in every walk of life.
I know it can be daunting the first time: not knowing what to expect, who will be there, or even how to approach your employer about taking time off. But the training is hugely rewarding, and the skills gained are transferable into both personal and professional life.
If you’re an employer, I encourage you to think about the value a Reservist can bring to your team. And if you’re an employee considering becoming a Reservist, please don’t hesitate to reach out on 0345 646 0406 or fill in our online enquiry form and I’d be happy to share my experience and answer any questions.
