The Value of Workplace Mediation

Escalating disputes in the workplace can impact productivity, and lead to time consuming grievances and costly tribunal claims.

In most instances disputes can be resolved quickly and without a lengthy process. This is where mediation shows value.  Mediation is a voluntary process in which a third party facilitates discussions with the individuals in conflict to find a mutually acceptable solution and way forward.

Disputes may include perceived unfair treatment, bullying, or disagreement of allocation of work. In some instances, the concern could be relating to behaviours of one employee against another employee.

When would the employer offer mediation?

Workplace mediation should be offered immediately when there is a dispute, initiating this process early can ensure that it does not escalate.  The dispute may be between employees, groups/teams, or with managers.

Both parties would agree to workplace mediation and agree to the following principles:

  • All parties consent to participate
  • Confidentiality is applied
  • All parties agree that the aim is to resolve the conflict

Does mediation work?

Mediation is a highly effective way of resolving disputes, carried out by a trained mediator. When using a third party mediator this allows for a neutral and unbiased approach, ensuring that both parties feel safe to express their feelings and can work towards a mutually acceptable resolution.  It is reported that workplace mediation success rates range from 70 – 90 per cent.

The value of mediation is that the process is a way of resolving the conflict, improves relationships, and reduces the impact of the loss of key employees, or tribunal claims.

In my experience as a trained workplace mediator, employees feel that they are listened to and have a solution going forward.  They also find that communication and relationships are improved.
