Prioritising Mental Health for Veterans and Families

Transitioning from Military to Civilian life can have a significant impact on Veterans mental health. Veterans often face depression, anxiety, substance abuse issues and sleep disorders.

It is important that Employers know how to support their Veteran employees and staff with Family members still serving.

Veterans in the workplace may face unique mental health challenges, including:

  1. PTSD and trauma: Experiences during military service can impact daily life and work performance. Many Veterans may have faced trauma whilst being deployed overseas and on Operations.
  2. Transition difficulties: Adapting to civilian work environments can be challenging, often with a feeling of depression and isolation.
  3. Stress and anxiety: Veterans may experience stress and anxiety related to their military experiences and transition. This is all new to them so they will need time to adapt.

To support veteran employees’ mental health, consider:

  1. Mental health training: Provide training for managers and HR staff on veteran-specific mental health issues such as how to spot signs of PTSD.
  2. Access to resources: Offer access to mental health resources, such as Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) or veteran-specific support services.
  3. Flexible work arrangements: Provide flexible work arrangements to accommodate veterans’ needs, such as medical appointments and the same with families, especially whilst their loved ones are deployed.
  4. Open communication: Foster an open and supportive work environment where veterans feel comfortable discussing their mental health with someone within the Workplace.

Supporting veteran mental health can lead to:

  1. Improved productivity: Veterans feel more comfortable and supported in the workplace and therefore will want to come to work and therefore their productivity will improve and also increase.
  2. Increased retention: Veterans are more likely to stay with an employer that supports their mental health and allows them time off when this may be required.
  3. Positive work culture: A supportive work environment can lead to happier employees, creating a positive working culture for all staff.
