Stepping into the Civilian workplace culture for many Veterans can be difficult, all they have known for many years is the Military and the structure that comes with it. Understanding and embracing this shift is key to long-term success.
In the Military, we have a uniform, we have timings, there is structure, hierarchy and clarity. Orders are to be followed, our missions are clear and everyone knows their role. Often in Civilian workplaces, employees are left to make some decisions on their own and have more freedom. You will not have to march into your Boss’s office, and their communication style can seem more casual, with the decision-making being more collaborative rather than directive.
Many Veterans have been on Operations, where they work under pressure and at a fast pace, often with strict deadlines. It is crucial for Veterans to understand that in the Civilian workplace, although the pace of work may seem slower or less urgent it doesn’t necessary indicate that the work is less important. The work is measured differently, using collaboration and long-term strategies.
Your tone and Communication may have to be adjusted, be cautious of the “Banter” that you are used to within the Military. Many of you will be used to a direct tone, which is used when giving orders in the Military, however in a Civilian workplace this can be misread as abrupt or aggressive. Adopting a more conversational tone and asking for input when in discussions can help foster those stronger workplace relationships.
Lastly, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Seeking mentorship, observing the office culture, and requesting feedback are all signs of a proactive, adaptable employee qualities veterans already embody.
Civilian workplace culture may feel strange at first, but with patience and an open mind, veterans can thrive and bring unique strengths that will make them stand out. For more guidance please contact us on 0345 646 0406 or fill in our online enquiry form and we will be in touch.
