Love Deeply, Plan Smartly!

Cristiano Ronaldo’s engagement to his long-term partner, Georgina Rodríguez, has unsurprisingly made international headlines. As one of the most iconic sports figures in the world, with an extensive portfolio of assets, Ronaldo’s personal life has always attracted as much attention as his professional career. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t know Ronaldo, I mean who wouldn’t?!

The highlight of Ronaldo’s proposal was of course the diamond ring, where there are speculations surrounding its carat size and estimated value. Whilst a ring is generally seen as a symbol of love and commitment, that same ring carries legal implications in family law.

In family law, an engagement ring is generally considered a gift given in contemplation of marriage. If the marriage proceeds, the recipient typically keeps the ring. However, if the engagement is called off, the question of whether the ring should be returned can depend on the circumstances, including whether it was a conditional gift or not. The law may vary depending on jurisdiction, but there are often disputes over high-value engagement rings.

There are speculations around Ronaldo already having a prenuptial agreement in place and what that sets out. As a family lawyer, I have always been impressed by Ronaldo’s thoughtful approach towards both professional and personal life. This reflects a broader and growing trend of individuals, especially those with ultra/high net worth, taking proactive steps to protect their assets.

A prenuptial agreement is a legal document signed by both parties before marriage, setting out how assets will be divided in the event of a divorce. There is also the option of a postnuptial agreement, which can be entered into after the wedding.

Some may see such agreements as unromantic, but that perception often misses the bigger picture. In reality, it helps to strengthen the relationship by encouraging financial transparency and open conversations regarding expectations. A prenuptial agreement does not reflect mistrust, but helps to provide clarity and reduces uncertainty.

Prenuptial agreements are not just beneficial for public figures and the wealthy, it could be used by couples wanting to protect their assets and clarify financial expectations.
