Around the World in 80 Days

Feb 01, 2016

Traversing the globe is not a new thing. Jules Verne’s Phileas Fogg began his journey around the world in 80 days on Tuesday, 1st October in 1872. Fogg’s fictitious journey took him from London to Egypt, then India, Hong Kong, Japan, the United States of America with his arrival back to London after 79 days on Saturday, 21st December, 1872.

The story captured the imagination of many. Here are some examples of genuine attempts to replicate Fogg's fictitious circumnavigation:

  • 1889 - Nellie Bly, 72 days
  • 1903 - James Sayre, using only public transport, 54 days, 9 hrs & 42 mins
  • 1984 - Nicholas Coleridge, 78 days
  • 1988 - Michael Palin, 79 days & 7 hours
  • 2014 - ‘Optimistic Traveler team’ (without money), 79 days.
